Advocating for children - equitable - accessible - sustainable

My name is Angela Sommers, and I am running for Red Deer Public School District Trustee.

I am a mother of three children in the Red Deer Public School District. I grew up in Red Deer and have chosen to raise my family here. I have been a parent in our school system for twelve years and have 6 to go, therefore have a very relevant understanding and interest in the success of our children’s educational system.  I know first hand the challenges and barriers that exist for parents and teachers simply attempting to access the resources needed for their children to be successful.

My community has always been an integral factor in my sense of belonging and helps shape my family each day. I believe there are few better ways to champion that than through volunteering. For eight years, I sat on the Central Alberta Legal Aid Appeal Board, the last two as Chair. I have participated volunteering with my children’s schools parent councils, breakfast clubs,  and currently I'm working with Mountview elementary school designing and building their outdoor classrooms and labs courtyard. I enjoy building relationships with all kinds of people. I am highly professional in all my dealings with colleagues and over the years have developed long-standing and mutually beneficial relationships that are industry-wide. I also consider myself to be personable and outgoing, able to quickly build rapport with people and demonstrate cultural sensitivity in our increasingly multicultural communities.

Professionally, I've owned and operated a landscape design and construction business for over two decades. My education is in  Landscape Architecture and permaculture.

Running my own business, teaching, and being active in the community has required me to be both a leader and collaborator, an independent thinker and a team player. This requires constant growth and I continue to educate and challenge myself here.

And it’s because of all this, who I am, my family, the successes (especially the small ones) we’ve built on, the causes I have dedicated my energy to helping, all of it brings me to one place, and that is to the Public School Board.
